Frosh Cleaners: A Review

Frosch LogoIn addition to trying to find cleaner makeup and skincare brands, I’ve been looking into green/nontoxic cleaners. Pond and Rory really love to lick things (the floor, walls and windows) so I’ve been searching for cleaners I don’t feel guilty using around them.  Frosh is a European based brand that uses less toxic cleaning chemicals, is cruelty-free and environmentally friendly.Frosh’s dish soap is the first thing we tried. I was incredibly tired of trying all sorts of dish soap and still covering our dishes in toxic chemicals. We’ve been using the free and clear dish soap and it is fantastic! Not only is it free of most toxic chemicals found in dish soap, it also works really well. They have a few other types of dish soap, but those contain parfum and colorants. We’ve also been using the Lemon Toilet Bowl Cleaner. This is an absolutely incredible product. We’ve been in the process of remodeling a bathroom so that toilet isn’t used on a regular basis. This leads to a lot of build-up and this product removed it all after just a few minutes of soaking. The last product I’ve been testing out is their PH Neutral Universal Cleaner. This is a super concentrated, multi-purpose cleaner. In order to use it correctly you do need to mix it with water before you use it to clean. It does a great job of getting gunk off my counter. It also makes an absolutely fantastic floor cleaner.I would highly suggest these three products. I would love to see Frosh come out with more free and clear versions of their products in the future but I will continue to use the great products they currently have!

Peanut Butter Mousse Filling

I was able to go see my Mom for Mother’s day and when I asked her what she’d like me to make her as a special dessert she said, “anything as long as it has THICK chocolate ganache!” So I decided these cupcakes were the perfect thing for her. However, I didn’t want them to be so plain and chocolaty, so knowing she loved Reese’s Peanut Butter cups I decided to do a take on those. This peanut butter mousse filling is incredible. It is light, fluffy and very peanut buttery. It goes perfectly as a filling for cupcakes or as a filling for pretty much any type of sandwich cookie. I only had crunchy peanut butter at my disposal but I think it gives the finished product a great texture that creamy certainly won’t. However, if you’re really opposed to crunchy (like my sister) you will probably want to stick with creamy peanut butter. It won’t change the taste, only the texture. Be careful also, to not use any natural peanut butters. Those will separate as you’re beating them. Just use Jiffy or another “regular” type of peanut butter.[amd-yrecipe-recipe:197]Source: Adapted from Martha Stewart

Beer and Cheese Dip

Alex hosts a weekly game night for several of his friends and I like to make snack food for them. They love having chips and different kinds of dip so I decided this was a fantastic way to use the extra Guinness I had in my fridge left over from making Guinness cake.I’ve used ground beef in this recipe but you could also use bacon crumbles if you prefer. I already had some ground beef browned so I thought it would be the perfect addition.I never actually got a photo of this dip because the boys ate all before I could get one. They typically don’t eat dips I make that fast so they really must have loved this one (either that or they were really hungry, you can never know with a group of men).  However, you’ll just have to take my word that it actually looked beautiful and your guest will fall in love with it.[amd-yrecipe-recipe:194]Source: Adapted from Foodie Crush

Hynt Beauty: A Review

Hynt Beauty is very big in the green beauty community. They are highly talked of so I thought I would give several of their products a try. I had a hard time narrowing down my order since there were so many things that looked great, but I was finally able to decide. The first, and in my opinion best item I tried was their Sun Prep Moisturizer. This is a light moisturizer with SPF to keep you skin young. I’ve been trying to find a light SPF moisturizer for a while now and I hadn’t been able to find a clean version. This product though is fantastic! It provides a great sunscreen base and doesn’t interfere with your makeup application. I typically make sure to put down a primer though on top of this, to keep my makeup from sliding. One consideration though, because this product contains non-nano zinc it can leave a shine on your face under bright light. I would avoid using this product if you’re going to be taking photos, but for every day wear it is great!I also tried one of Hynt’s pressed eye shadow trios. I was saddened by this product because I’ve found so many incredible pressed shadows, this one just didn’t quite live up. They don’t blend very well into each other and it also tends to flake off by the end of the day no matter how much primer I apply before hand. The final full-sized product I decided to review was the Hynt’s Duet Perfecting Concealer. I had heard about this concealer from several different green beauty bloggers who absolutely RAVED about it. However, my experience with it wasn’t quite so happy. I first ordered the sample size, which is an ok way to see if you actually like the product. I thought I might like it after I had finished the sample size so I went ahead and ordered the full size. However, after using this product for several weeks longer I realized that it really didn’t work with my skin type. I was primarily using it under my eyes to cover my dark circles and no matter what I did it still went creasy on me each and every time. I would have the heinous under eye lines whenever I used this product and at no other times.  I do find this product is ok for covering blemishes on my face as long as it is a tiny spot.I’ve also tried sample sizes of the pressed foundation, the Aria lipstick and the lipgloss. However, I wasn’t awed by any of these products and probably won’t purchase larger sizes. Hynt though has a great array of products thought and there are a few more I would actually like to try. I encourage you to do the same if something catches you eye.

Crockpot Mongolian Beef

IMG_20160226_144641370Alex has been requesting different Chinese dishes for dinner the last few weeks. I’ve been trying to accommodate as many of them as I can since I haven’t been home for dinner too much. I’ve also been trying to make as many crockpot dishes as possible since I can just set it and forget it.This dish was gone very quickly. Alex absolutely loved it and he had it for lunch for the next three days! He said it had fantastic flavor, and was even great reheated. The red pepper flakes had just a slight bit of heat to the overall recipe, if you don’t want any sort of spicy you can just leave them out.[amd-yrecipe-recipe:192]

Plant Apothecary: A Review

plant-logo-for-website-300px1Plant Apothecary was a fantastic find when I discovered them a few months ago. I’d been searching high and low for some non-toxic shower gels and hadn’t had much luck finding any without lots of ingredients. When I found Plant though, their simplicy of ingredients and the lack of any nasty chemicals made me realize I just had to try them. One thing I absolutely LOVE about Plant is the fact that their products are made by people with disabilities in their Brooklyn plant. This provides lots of job opportunities for people with disabilities which is a great reason to support this company!Plant has several different products. I personally purchased their Zip Zap Mask and a shower gel. They also offer several other types of masks, body and face oil. They offer several different scents in both the body oil and shower gel. There really is something for everyone. The shower gel is lovely. It is very cleansing without leaving any sort of film on your skin afterwards. It also does not dry out your skin after you shower like some non-toxic shower gels I’ve used. I find it to be extremely moisturizing and I don’t seem to need a lot of moisturizer when I’m done showering. The Zip Zap mask has been underwhelming for me. I had high hopes for this mask but it just didn’t seem to help me when I would get a pimple. The mask is a powder mask that you mix with water before you apply it to your face. This is a great idea since you can mix only what you need and it will keep much longer. However, I didn’t feel like it really did anything for me when my skin was struggling. I prefer Herbivore Botanicals: Blue Tansy mask in this instance since it calms my skin pretty much instantly. The Plant mask just didn’t measure up.I really love this company and I absolutely plan on ordering more of their shower gels in the future. I also would love to try one of their body oils, however with summer coming I won’t get much use out of one for a while so I’ll probably wait till next fall to purchase one. If you’ve been looking for a new non-toxic shower gel I highly suggest trying one from Plant!
